MADE IT BACK TO THE GUILD, SIR. OUR MARK IS IN CUSTODY BEING QUESTIONED AS I TYPE.

GOOD. NOW GET TO WORK ON THE TRAINER.

ABOUT THAT, SIR, THEY WANT ME TO RUN THE CRUCIBLE TOMORROW. SIR, I’M NOT READY.

ARE YOU SAYING THAT MY TRAINING WASN’T SUFFICIENT? THAT A FEW DAYS WAS REALLY GOING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YEARS OF TRAINING?

NO, SIR.

THEN SHUT THE FUCK UP AND GO PASS THE CRUCIBLE TOMORROW.

SIR, YES, SIR.

GET SOME SLEEP. YOU’LL NEED IT. PALADIN REECE OUT.

Kira gives me a sideways look as I put the comm-tile back down. “Was that a paladin girlfriend or something?”

“Jealous?”

She takes another bite of her fruit and says, “Maybe. What’s up?”

I scoff and put an arm around her and kiss her head. “Just one of my plebes.”

She cocks her head in questioning.

“A trainee of sorts. We’re assigned a trainee or plebe right after they pass prelims. You know—to show them the ropes, bust their chops, and generally be a pain in their asses. When we think they’re ready, they run the Crucible, where we keep them up for three or four days at a time and basically run them through any scenario possible.”

“Jeez, sounds awful.”

“It is as bad as it sounds, but she’s ready. She’s a smart and tough kid. She shouldn’t have a problem with it. I’m kinda pissed they’re running her through it without me. I’m sure it’s just another ‘fuck you’ from Daimyo Corbin.”

“How many have you trained?”

I sigh and put my hands on the back of my head, trying to keep a tally. “Well, you don’t start training until you’re at least five years out of probation, and I think I was about twenty at that point, so I don’t know… One a year since then, so maybe fifteen or more.”

“Wow. I didn’t have anything formal like that. I just left my parents one day. Sink or swim.” She nestles into my arms then says, “So who did you have to blow to get two days of leave?”

“Classy, as always.”

She shrugs. “That’s why you like me.”

“True.” After eating and taking a few sips of the fluid, I start to feel human again. “Daimyo Raines wants something from me. He’s not telling me the whole story—I know it—but there’s something brewing. I thought I’d take advantage and ask for a few days of leave. Besides, I’ve been working my ass off for more than a year without so much as a breather. Thought I deserved it.”

“So what they got you on now?” She stops. “Okay, never mind. It’s secret. Forget I asked.”

I slump down in the pile of pillows and grab her by the waist so she’s next to me. “Honestly, I don’t even give a shit anymore. The Guild is a fucking joke of what it used to be. When we first met, I was taking down Po because he had stolen vaccines from the Backic Keeper faction. Turns out we didn’t retrieve all of the vaccines, and some of them are being sold on the black market.
